The design process for Neelambari involved a deep understanding of Kerala and Chettinad architectural styles, as well as the client's vision for a serene and culturally rich residence. Traditional elements were incorporated, such as Athangudi tiles, wooden carvings, and ornate facades woven together with the client's fond childhood memories of visiting their tharavaadu. The off-center courtyard and poomugham sitout were designed to create a seamless transition between indoors and outdoors. Careful attention was paid to natural ventilation, lighting, and the overall flow of spaces.
The result is a harmonious blend of heritage and modernity, creating a unique and peaceful living experience.Every element, from materials to color palette, was chosen to transport the client back to a simpler time, while embracing the comforts of modern living.
The bedrooms and bathrooms are designed as private, serene spaces, each with its own unique character and charm. A sloping roof with traditional Kerala-style clay tiles, adds a touch of authenticity to the design. The dining opens up to a covered patio space looking onwards to the landscape greenery with seating and a wash area where one can unwind and have a peaceful experience. The ground floor features an open living- dining area with an off centered courtyard resembling the nadumuttam and two bedrooms, one that opens towards the passage and courtyard and another one in the south west corner. The upperfloor on the other hand features two bedrooms , a private lounge area and semi covered terrace area with yellow oxide flooring and wooden seating elements.
The incorporation of natural materials like porotherm blocks and athangudi tiles further enhances the thermal quality of the residence.
